Cute outfits for working in the office

In this first installment of Fashion Fridays, I will be addressing office-appropriate yet chic clothing ensembles. I work in a Catholic high school and these are all outfits that I have worn there. I do, on occasion, challenge the dress code but I have never been reprimanded, so consider these office-approved!

I’m currently trying to whittle my closet down and only retain pieces that work with multiple outfits. The staples I have kept are:

  • Colorful cardigans, various sleeve lengths
  • Line-dry/dryer friendly multi-seasonal dresses
  • Black, navy, and khaki trousers (line-dry/dryer friendly if possible)
  • Black, white, and navy skirts
  • Colorful sleeveless blouses that complement black, white, khaki, and navy bottoms
  • Flats and heels in nude and black
  • Dress boots in brown and black
  • Simple/minimalistic jewelry pieces

When I purchase clothes, I make sure that I can think of at least three outfits I can create using the new item. When I plan outfits, I focus on the colors; I love to dress boldly with contrasting shades. In the winter, I tend to focus on darker colors — most of my outfits are arrangements of black, gray, and plum, burgundy, or teal.

I also try to balance the halves of my outfits. If I’m wearing a skirt, I tend to cover more of my upper body with long or three-quarter sleeves. If I am wearing pants or a maxi-skirt, I tend to wear short-sleeves. It’s all about balance!

Outfit #1

  1. Cardigan: The Dream of the Crop Cardigan in Honey, ModCloth, $29.00
  2. Dress: Sleeveless Ponte Sheath Dress in Bright Boreal Blue Floral, Land’s End, $89.00
  3. Shoes: Tiana Pump in Nude, Kelly & Katie, $39.99

Outfit #2

  1. Dress: Elbow Sleeve Merino Cowl Sweater Dress in Navy, Land’s End, $119.00
  2. Tights: 100 Denier Opaque Tights in Purple, Gipsy Tights, $9.18
  3. Boots: Belicia Bootie in Black Leather, Lauren Ralph Loren, $79.99

I can wear this outfit in the spring/summer because merino wool works seasonally to insulate in the winter and wick sweat in the warmer temperatures. All you need to do is lose the tights and update your choice of shoes to something like this:

  1. Shoes (left): Danzey Ballet Flat in Nude Embossed Faux Leather, Mix No. 6, $24.99
  2. Shoes (right): Tiana Pump in Nude, Kelly & Katie, $39.99

Outfit #3

  1. Pants: Trousers in Marisa Fit in Black, Loft, $79.50
  2. Sweater: Tie Cuff Sweater in Black Ivory Combo, Loft, $49.50
  3. Shoes: Evette Pump in Black, Lifestride, $39.99

Outfit #4

  1. Cardigan: The Dream of the Crop Cardigan in Honey, ModCloth, $29.00
  2. Dress: Retro Floral Dress from ModCloth (mine is no longer available, but a similar style will do nicely!)
  3. Shoes: Tiana Pump in Nude, Kelly & Katie, $39.99

Outfit #5

  1. Jumpsuit: Miss Candyfloss The Embolden Age Jumpsuit in Burgundy, ModCloth, $129.00
  2. Shoes: Tiana Pump in Nude, Kelly & Katie, $39.99

Outfit #6

Sometimes I push back against my school’s dress code by wearing classy t-shirts. You can dress them up quite easily by pairing them with coordinating colors and a neat blazer:

  1. Shirt: Any women’s t-shirt from Out of Print Clothing ($22-30)
  2. Blazer: Cinched Sleeve Open Blazer, Loft, $118.00 (this is not the jacket I own, but one that is comparable)
  3. Skirt: Yellow Corduroy Skirt (mine is unavailable but looks like the one in the image)
  4. Tights: 100 Denier Opaque Tights in Rich Chocolate, Gipsy Tights, $9.18
  5. Shoes: Tiana Pump in Black Patent, Kelly & Katie, $39.99
